When the Old Pro (Larry Reedy Sr, founder of LW Reedy) strolled around town handing out his trademark gold coins, we’re pretty sure he did not envision Elmhurst hosting a coding program for kids or a bar where people participate in throwing axes. Those are just two of the many new businesses recently making Elmhurst their home.
New to Town
Here are a few new businesses that caught our eye from our view at 101 York:
- Crush Collectibles. 510 Spring Rd. Selling new and pre-owned action figures and collectibles.
- Throw Nation. 630 W. Lake (former home of Arena Sports Bar & Grille). Full restaurant and bar. Shuffleboard, football, ax-throwing, and stump.
- P&P Computers. 695 N York. Computer & electronics repair and IT services.
For the Kids
A few for kids:
- Studio Preschool. Michigan side of the York Centre Plaza. Daycare and babysitting service with an emphasis on the arts.
- Code Ninjas. 579‐581 N York. Kids 7‐14 learn to code at their own pace through an engaging, game‐based curriculum.
- Good Kids Clothing Co. 126 N York. Kids’ clothing made from organic and sustainable materials. Elmhurst is home to many business owners, contractors and others who frequently work from home.
Work Together
In addition to our amazing Elmhurst Public Library and many coffee shop workspaces, Elmhurst can now boast of two new shared workspaces:
- Bookmark Ventures. 126 N Addison. A co‐working office and business community where business people can hold meetings, make calls, and be productive without the distractions of home or a costly, time-consuming commute.
- The Business Zone at Community Bank of Elmhurst. 330 West Butterfield. The CBE Business Zone is an innovative co‐working space for use by the bank’s business account clients. Free coffee, use of office equipment, WiFi.
Commuter News
Elmhurst’s proposed train station renovations are in the works. In addition to replacing the commuter rail station, the City of Elmhurst hopes to build 3 new rail warming shelters, improve crosswalks and sidewalks, provide more covered bike parking, and improve ADA accessibility. The city expects to break ground in late 2020/early 2021.
Business Growth
It's always exciting, too, to see our current businesses grow.
- Guac n Tacos. 522 W. North Ave. Guac n Tacos will be opening its 4th location (2nd in Elmhurst) with an expanded menu and family-friendly seating options. This locally-owned and operated restaurant group began in Elmhurst (first location: 116 S York) and expanded to Downers Grove and Western Springs.
- York Classic Cinemas. 150 N York. After installing recliner seating in 3 theatres and remodeling the concession stand, more remodeling is scheduled at York Theatre. The theatre is also in the process of obtaining a liquor license.
We are curious to find out the names of the new businesses that will take the place of the empty or soon-to-be empty spaces in the Elmhurst Crossing shopping area near Whole Foods. Dress Barn, Avenue, Subway, PieFive and Party City are either leaving the shopping area or have already closed. The shopping area is still over 90% occupied even with current and pending closures, and the city is currently working on contracts with new tenants.
